Condor Speed Shop is soon coming out w/ a UHMW Power Steering Delete kit for the Gen1 MINI & is gauging interest.
So please post if you want or need one. Note: Expected Steering resistance will be BETWEEN a GOOD PUMP & a DEAD PUMP in! Why get one? A few good reasons below: - Pump & Fan assembly is known to fail. New pumps are no different. Many have gone thru multiple pumps. - Countless incidents of fire caused by the faulty pump: http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...bay-fires.html - The PS system, its hoses & tank leaks easily. Eliminate them permanently. -Kit is REVERSIBLE. Should you decide to go back to stock, you can put back a working pump in. -Relatively easy to install. Just remove the 2 hose banjo bolts on the rack, put the kit in place of the hoses. -Shave some weight if you wanna extract the entire Powersteering system off the car. -Get a more connected & direct steering feel. It will have greater turning resistance, YES, but NOT like having a DEAD Pump in. Ask e30/36, z3 & Miata guys who've done this. - Affordable Temporary or Permanent Fix. Condor is looking to offer the kit around or under $50 depending on interest. A group buy will be coming up very soon! So, please post on this thread if you want one. Don't wait for your pump to fail. You can just get 1 & store it for future use. Sample UHMW Kit for e30/36 & Z3: ![]() Condor Speed Shop link: http://www.condorspeedshop.com/produ...lock-plate-e30 A new MINI-specific link will be put up soon by Condor to take orders. Please note that I've no commercial involvement whatsoever w/ Condor. I'm just a concerned Gen1 owner who has been frustrated & saddened by seeing all these threads about this failure. My PS is working fine & I'm expecting a kit promised by Condor once testing is done. This post is a humble way of THANKING Condor Speed Shop for helping the Gen1 MINI owners get an option for the PS woes. This kit won't have been developed this easily nor this soon w/o the generosity of fellow member, c0op3r. He not only donated a working 06 rack but also shipped it to Condor for R&D. Gratitude should go to these 2! Again, post if interested. Thanks!!!! |

Interesting. The pump in my R53 went out, but luckily it was still under warranty (barely). Had a 4 hour drive with a dead pump to get it fixed. I like the steering feel of the stock 1st gens, so I don't know that I'd delete the pump if it were working. It might be a good alternative to replacing a bad pump if money is tight.

It can be for any of the reasons above. It's affordable, reversible, easy to do. On paper, the pros far outweigh the cons. I've requested Condor if they could dyno the force required to steer w/ the kit. There is already data on the corresponding steering resistances on good & bad pumps on page 79 here:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...005-48680p.pdf Anyone can translate German? The figures 24N/3s & 69N/1.9s seem to connote those resistances. The delete will be somewhere in between. |

Just got an email from Condor.
They're doing an initial batch of 30pcs. Expected launch in a coupla weeks. They'll put up a link once this is out. The wait is almost over. ![]() |

So, this "kit" is just a block off plate for the rack?

Looks like a block off plate that still lets residual fluid circulate so pressure doesn't add additional resistance... Seems like a good idea...

Exactly what Snip's said!

Either I'm missing the obvious, or I'm just not getting it...or both.
Why is there residual fluid in the rack?...why can't I just cycle it out or use compressed air then block off the inlet/outlet utilizing a one way valve in the plate? |

In a sealed system, when the rack is moved side to side, fluid left as lube & air inside are displaced too. Without the pass-thru, resistance will be high, steering: unpredictably rough + risk of blowing seals.
