Do you have a PS3? If so you need to check out the PS3 Media server. I have been using it for years to play media that I get off of the internets.

AppleTV here, jailbroken with FireCore. Use it all the time to play AVI, MKV etc from a network drive, or apple store, Youtube and Netflix.

I don't have any Apple products anymore, but I like the Roku. It will run an app called Plex that will stream any media from your computer as well. I also have a Chromecast, which I like, but it's not a stand-alone thing.

I've found the Wd TV Live works the best. IT has fewer streaming channels that the Roke but it will play all my dl'd Mkv files with out any conversion. works great with movies in dts or 5.1 and plays all my flac files as well.

I have mainly Apple products in the house so I went with the Apple TV. We are extremely happy with it and recommend it if you use the iPhone or iPad as well. It is nice because the tv is set up to stream my picture stream and while I am traveling the pictures from my trip come up at home for the family to see.
